A MAN found with a flick knife in his pocket told a court he did not realise it was an offensive weapon – and did not know it was in his pocket.
Burnley magistrates heard how Paul Farran (36) told police the flick knife was a lighter when he was stopped riding his bike in Burnley. The defendant, who has 58 previous convictions, told police he had carried it even when out with his mother shopping.

Farran, of Parliament Street, Burnley, admitted possessing an offensive weapon in Briercliffe Road, Burnley, on August 16th. He was bailed until September 12th for reports.

Joanne Close (prosecuting) said Farran was seen riding with a rucksack on his back. When police searched him, they found a knife in his jacket pocket which the defendant immediately claimed was a lighter.

He later accepted it was a lighter and flick knife, although the lighter facility did not work.

Farran told the court he did not realise it was an offensive weapon, but now knew. He continued: "I just had it in my pocket. I didn't actually realise it was there."
