Officials ordered to give up golf to help economy

OFFICIALS in South Korea have been urged to give up golf because it "sends out the wrong message" when the nation's economy is struggling.
President Lee Myung-bak - who is himself a keen tennis player - has told officials to give up their favourite sport for the moment.
"Golf is not bad but ... as prices are unstable and the economic situation is not getting better, President Lee thinks they need to consider public sentiment," media reports have stated.
The president asked officials to avoid the sport for at least a month after his government started to lose popularity; had to abandon ambitious economic growth targets and saw big wage demands from the unions.
Golf is a very popular sport in South Korea but its high cost sees many players fly off to cheaper parts of Asia for a game. An average club charges $250,000 to $500,000 to join and members pay $250 per guest for a weekend round.
